Background to Singing for the Brain Ireland
Singing for the Brain (SFTB) Ireland is supported by the HSE Community Work Department, Cork Kerry Community Healthcare. This community-based initiative was founded by musical director Fiona Flavin and first piloted by the Crystal Project Mallow in 2015. Since then, it has expanded to Cork city and county, as well as offering an online option.
The core goal of SFTB is to nurture, uplift, and energize participants through the power of group singing. By joining a SFTB group, individuals can experience social connection, camaraderie, and a sense of belonging, all of which are integral to maintaining mental and emotional well-being.
We recognize the importance of social connection, particularly for those facing challenges such as dementia. SFTB provides a welcoming and supportive environment, where everyone, regardless of their abilities or health condition, can enjoy the benefits of group singing.
We also value the vital role that carers and family members play in supporting individuals with cognitive or health conditions. SFTB offers a space where carers and loved ones can feel supported, understood, and encouraged, helping them to stay connected to others facing similar challenges.
By participating in this initiative, coordinators, musical facilitators, and volunteers also contribute to a meaningful cause, making a difference in the lives of others.
SFTB welcomes anyone interested in the uplifting experience of group singing—no singing experience is necessary. Whether in-person or online, the groups provide a welcoming, inclusive atmosphere for all.

Singing for the Brain Summer Jamboree 2023
In July 2023, groups from across Cork came together for the first-ever Singing for the Brain Ireland Summer Jamboree, a heart-warming event that brought over 150 people together from 8 groups, both in-person and online. This special gathering celebrated the joy of singing and the bonds created through music, as participants shared their love of music and community.
Musical Director Fiona Flavin, alongside SFTB facilitators Kevin McCormack and Dean Flynn, led the event with a diverse and uplifting repertoire of songs, carefully selected to inspire unity and joy. The Jamboree was a celebration of community, with songs that crossed generations and connected voices from all walks of life.
